Humans are notoriously imperfect. Even Mary Poppins was only “practically perfect.” Often we set ourselves up for disappointment by comparing ourselves to the measurement of perfection. Compared against perfection, we indeed appear to not measure up. This can impact our self-esteem.
Self-esteem is how you feel and think about yourself. Sometimes we let others do the feeling and thinking for us and when they like us, we like ourselves and when they don’t, we don’t either. It is important to ignore what others think and regard about us for a moment and focus on what we really think and feel about ourselves. It is ours to own. Don’t let others determine it for you. If you want to increase your self-esteem, there are only two things you need to do. The first is to do good things and the second is to remember that you did them. Most of us go about life doing countless good things each day. Few of us remember we did them. A lot of our good things are taken for granted and forgotten quickly under the guise of being humble. Humility is more about being truthful regardless of the consequences and submitting our will to the will of a higher power than it is about not thinking about the good things we have done. Take some time and make a list of all the good things you have done and do. If you are struggling with self-esteem, this may be hard – not because you don’t do good things, but because you have trained yourself or been trained by someone else to not consider them. Try. Try really hard. Write them down and then review the list. Review it often. Add to the list each day. You can start small and think about things that are over-looked. Did you brush your teeth this morning? Get out of bed? Put on deodorant? Make your bed? Put them on your list. Then think about the moments in life – holding open a door, putting your dishes in the sink or dishwasher, saying hello to someone, the support you offered a friend, picking up a piece of trash, holding your tongue in an argument, etc. The good things you do both small and large are countless. As you review the list and add to it, you will begin to see how wonderful you really are. Your countenance will begin to change and your head will be held a little higher. Perfection is not attainable in this life but progress is. Keep improving. You are already awesome – you just have to remember it.
